The Parents Guide: Goal setting

Goal setting is a tool that is very popular right now.

People in business are using this tool to get things done quickly and sticking to their aims . It’s something I use in my life and I find immeasurable benefits. The concept is simple and with time can be simply achieved. It’s like anything in life, the more you do it, the more you get used to it. So i would suggest some short term goals and some long term goals.

Sit down with your child and discuss what they feel they want to achieve or how good they want to get on their instrument, (this could be anything from playing in a band , joining a youth orchestra, becoming famous and world class, playing with friends or just playing their favourite song in their own bedroom). It doesn’t matter what the long term goal is, it’s just good to have one.

Short term goals are important too. Make plans on what your child wants to achieve by the end of the week. This could be learning two lines of a piece really well, learning a piece from memory, learning four scales or only practicing slowly for a week. Make the goal do-able and then work to achieve it. When these goals are achieved, there is a great sense of satisfaction for your child, but also, it can help with being able to, and wanting to, learn more and more each week.

Let me know how you get on. I think you will find great benefits!
