This tip may come as a surprise to some of you, but from experience I’ve seen this really work.
Learning at the same time as your child!
Now don’t get worried, you don’t need to learn the same instrument, or any instrument for that matter. Learning anything and persevering with it, will encourage your child to keep going with their instrument.
If learning an instrument appeals to you, go for it! Learning together can be quite an experience. There is so much to be gained from helping each other along the way. Playing together, duets or even the same melodies can be really fun and often the child will learn some bits quicker. They can just seem to find it a bit more natural.
So don’t let this be a competition, the emphasis should be on the enjoyment and fun of the whole thing. If an instrument doesn’t really excite you, then learning something else, (maybe a language or a skill , craft or art), is just as good. Anything really where your child can see that you are putting in the effort to improve.
It will go a long way in your child respecting you for your perseverance and could possibly make their learning a whole lot easier.
